Smart glasses can read a label aloud, describe a scene, connect a remote visual interpreter, or magnify an image. Those are different kinds of assistance, for different users. A camera-and-audio product such as Ray-Ban Meta is not a substitute for an electronic magnifier, and neither is a mobility aid.

This guide organizes current products by the task they support. It does not rank every device on one artificial scale. The right starting point is the task you need help with, the vision you use, and whether the device works reliably in your environment.

Safety boundary: AI glasses do not replace a white cane, guide dog, orientation and mobility training, or professional advice. Object descriptions and directions can be incomplete, delayed, or wrong. Use them as a secondary information channel, not as collision avoidance.

How we label evidence

Capabilities in this guide use three evidence labels:

  • Vendor documented: the manufacturer or service provider documents the feature. This confirms that it is offered, not that it works equally well for every user.
  • Independently tested: a named third party has evaluated the device outside a vendor demonstration. Results may still vary by lighting, language, connectivity, and user.
  • Experimental or announced: a prototype, developer integration, limited rollout, or future product. Do not buy hardware on the assumption that this capability will arrive.

We have not conducted a comparative hands-on test of every device below. Prices and availability were checked against official product and support pages on August 21, 2026. Availability can differ by region and edition. Ask for a demonstration or return window before committing to an expensive assistive device.

What AI glasses can help with today

Reading text

Camera-based glasses can read printed labels, signs, menus, and documents aloud. Dedicated products such as Envision and OrCam provide controls designed around reading. General-purpose Meta glasses can answer questions about visible text, but their output depends on camera framing, connectivity, and the AI response.

None offers perfect OCR. Curved packaging, glare, small print, handwriting, multiple columns, and poor lighting can cause omissions. Our guide to reading labels, signs, and documents explains how to test this task.

Identifying objects and describing surroundings

Multimodal AI can name an object or generate a broad scene description. This can help with orientation or finding context, but it is not dependable obstacle detection. A description may omit a step, open door, moving vehicle, low branch, or transparent barrier.

Hands-free and remote assistance

Audio glasses can keep a user’s hands available for a cane, guide dog, wheelchair control, or another task. Remote assistance adds a human who sees the glasses camera feed. Meta documents hands-free Be My Eyes calls on its AI glasses, including trusted contacts, volunteers, and participating service-directory organizations. Envision documents Call a Companion and Call an Aira Agent on its Home and Professional editions.

Remote assistance needs a connection and shares a live view with another person. Check the service’s availability, cost, privacy terms, and response model before depending on it.

Glasses can deliver audio or visual directions and some services can describe surroundings. That is useful for route context, but current products do not provide the reliable curb, drop-off, traffic, and obstacle detection required to replace established mobility tools. Blind users and low-vision users need different tools

Blind users may benefit most from audio output, text-to-speech, object identification, scene descriptions, and remote visual assistance. A visual display or magnifier may provide little or no value if the user cannot make use of the displayed image.

Low-vision users may benefit from magnification, contrast adjustment, autofocus, and a display that preserves usable peripheral vision. Some also use audio reading when visual reading becomes tiring. The specific eye condition alone does not determine suitability. Visual field, acuity, contrast sensitivity, comfort, and the task all matter.

Users with limited hand mobility may value voice control and a customizable physical shortcut even when they do not need visual assistance. Users who are deaf or hard of hearing need visual captions, not audio-only output. Meta Ray-Ban Display supports captions for certain calls, but ordinary Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta models do not have an in-lens display.

Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta

Evidence: vendor documented. Meta documents visual questions, environment descriptions, hands-free controls, and Be My Eyes integration across compatible AI glasses. These are general-purpose consumer glasses with accessibility uses, not dedicated assistive devices.

Their advantage is a familiar frame, broad retail availability, open-ear audio, and a lower entry price than specialist hardware. Their weaknesses are just as important: there is no visual magnification on audio-only models, AI responses can be wrong, many visual queries require cloud processing, and camera use creates bystander and document-privacy concerns.

The Meta ecosystem is changing quickly. The Wearables Device Access Toolkit lets approved developers extend mobile apps to compatible glasses. Meta describes Aira and OOrion as early accessibility experiences. That does not mean every announced DAT app is publicly available in every region. Check the app and Meta support pages before purchase. Developers should use our smart-glasses SDK and app directory rather than treating a press announcement as stable API documentation.

Envision Glasses

Evidence: vendor documented. Envision uses Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2 hardware with accessibility software. Official specifications list an 8 MP camera, Snapdragon XR1, a mono speaker, and a weight of 46 grams without the frame. It is not a bone-conduction speaker.

The editions differ materially:

  • Read Edition, $1,899: reading features, security and maintenance updates, and a limited software-update pass.
  • Home Edition, $2,499: the broader feature set, including scene description, object finding, Call a Companion, and Call an Aira Agent, with the same limited update-pass model.
  • Professional Edition, $3,499: the full feature set, longer warranty, priority support, and unlimited software updates for the life of the hardware.

Envision says the Read and Home editions include an initial update pass and that later feature updates normally cost $199 per year. Security and maintenance updates remain separate. The previous version of this guide incorrectly described all editions as $3,499 with lifetime updates.

We removed an unsupported 95% OCR claim and do not assign a fixed battery runtime. Envision publishes battery capacity and charging data in its technical specifications, while its marketing page describes typical use. Actual runtime depends heavily on camera, cloud, calls, and display use.

OrCam MyEye

Evidence: vendor documented. OrCam MyEye is a camera module that attaches to glasses. It reads text aloud and identifies trained faces, products, colors, and currency. OrCam states that core recognition can work without an internet connection, while newer optional AI or magnifier workflows may have different requirements.

The official US page lists MyEye models from $4,250, about 1.5 to 2 hours of active use, and a 22.5 gram device. It also states that users need control of head and hand movements. That makes a personal trial especially important. This product provides audio information and does not improve vision.

eSight Go

Evidence: vendor documented. eSight Go belongs in a different category. It places a magnified camera image on full-HD OLED displays for people with significant central vision loss who retain usable peripheral vision. eSight documents up to 24x magnification, a 45-degree field of view, 170 gram weight, and up to three hours of continuous use.

It does not solve the same problem as an audio AI assistant. A blind user who cannot use the displayed image needs text-to-speech or human assistance instead. ARx AI Gen 1.5 and Ally Solos

ARx evidence: vendor documented. ARx describes Gen 1.5 as an 8 MP camera and open-ear audio headset that connects to a compatible Android phone. It can provide a hands-free interface for the ARx app and supported phone-based accessibility services. Phone compatibility, application support, connectivity, and each service’s own terms affect the experience. The official US storefront showed a $599 sale price when checked, while regional availability pages differed.

Ally Solos evidence: vendor documented, availability constrained. Envision’s official store listed Ally Solos Glasses at $699 but marked them sold out when checked. The product combines a camera and open-ear audio with Envision’s Ally assistant. Confirm stock, region, feature access, prescription options, and return terms before purchase.

Glasses earn their cost when hands-free access changes a repeated task. If you only read mail at a desk, a phone stand, scanner, CCTV magnifier, or handheld device may be more effective. If you need short, frequent interactions while moving through daily life, wearable audio can be valuable.

Privacy, connectivity, and ongoing cost

Camera glasses can capture other people, private mail, medicine details, payment information, or workplace material. Cloud processing may send an image or audio outside the device.   3. Time how long framing, capture, and response take. Record failures, not only successes.
  4. Confirm which functions work offline and what happens when the phone or network disconnects.
  5. Check comfort, heat, audio privacy, charging, and control accessibility for at least an hour.
  6. Verify the return period, warranty, feature-update policy, and remote-service fees in writing.
  7. Keep established mobility and medical supports in place.

The useful purchase question is not “Which glasses are best?” It is “Does this device complete my recurring task reliably enough to justify its full cost?” Check whether the device fits your needs through a trial or demonstration whenever possible.
